One of the things I have learned during my journalism degree is to think twice, or maybe three times before I press the send/publish/share button. I have done it, and ofcause like any other South African citizen, I believe in the 'power to the people' concept or rather voicing out your opinion, and to do so for the marginalised society if you have the appropriate platform/s. Touching on the issue about president Jacob Zuma's apparant home renovations debate; a fair amount of people have been reported to being aggaravated and angered by the matter.
According to The Citizen Online, Constitutional Law expert, Pierre De Vos described the government's multi-million rand reported upgrade of Zuma's private home as the 'blatent looting of public funds'. The Citizen Online reports that, Zuma lacked even the most basic sense of right and wrong through his alleged involvement in what seems to have been a hushed-up project.
Personally, I believe that the millions of rands that the president wants to spend on luxury, could be used on more important issues like the high unemployment rate in our country, as well as to settle down the Marikana saga that has been going on for far too long. Mind you, this is tax payers' money we are talking about. Once again, this got me thinking. It seems like whenever a societal problem surfaces, there has to be another issue that puts the president on the spotlight. Looking back at the textbook issue in Limpopo; during that whole process, 'the spear' (which I will not be getting into) painting shifted the spectacle from what seemed to concern the society. But, that's just my opinion, and I would be more interested to hear more as this will not only affect our already struggling economy, but the lives of many South African citizens.
